complete gender equality? i dont think shit like that is going to happen this century. please do not take me to court because everything i'm writing in this entire post is based entirely on my very own thinking and feelings and it does not depict the current state of equality the state is in. i was reading some articles on the BBC News website and i stumbled across this article that provided pictures to the new signs in certain part of europe. for instance, the fire exit sign is no longer the bald symmetrical man but a woman in boots (probably leather) and hair flying to the back. the usual
suggestive sign with the mum attending to her baby has now changed to a man attending to his baby. yeah sure, as if these signs are going to closen the equality gap.
here are some of my reasons why i think gender equality can never exist in this century.
#1 National Servicethis issue has been up for debate for a significant duration of time but a conclusion (or at least, a favourable conclusion) has not been reached. until the day when women are dressed in no.4 (for women that do not know what that is, it's basically the green camou prints that some of you swoon over), going through the same Standard Obstacle Course (just for the women again, it is the 'impossible' course to go through because of the heights, mud, heat, insects, sand, ropes, etc.), eat (the super fare from SFI) and get the same amount of punishment, i will not agree that complete gender equality exists. Well, since the females do not even have to go for NS now, i believe it will take another millennium before they start to eat bugs (well, not literally).
#2 Dressing/Uniform/Make UpI believe many of us (guys) have been told to cut our hair once the back touches or collar, or when our fringe touches our eyebrow (my previous teacher told us to either cut our fringe or shave our eyebrow), or even when our sideburn is long, etc. At an older age, we are being told that we are not allowed to keep any facial hair because it does not reflect well on the school/institute/college we are in. Why then are girls allowed to keep really really long hair (trust me, i have a primary school friend whose hair touched her ass.), keep long sideburns, have their fringe covering their eyes and ditto sadako? Also, if 10 students (5 boys, 5 girls) dyed their hair and went to school, at the end of the day, i can be sure that all 5 boys have been caught and only 1 or 2 girls will be caught. i'm not denying the fact that perhaps they can cover up well (by distracting the teachers with their screams at one side, and the coloured hair girl run out of sight on the other), but still, when i was in my jc schooling days, i've seen girls with almost golden coloured hair and their civic tutors said nothing about it. just to add on, they seem to be more capable in convincing their CTs that the hair colour is natural.
As much as i'm not a piercing fetishist, why is it that girls can wear one stud (one is just for simplification purpose, you and i both know that one hardly exists) on each side of the ear, and yet guys can not even put a twig through OUR OWN ears.
Also, even though i am not supportive of the whole folding the sleeves
phenomenon, i do not understand why do teachers ask the boy "are you a girl" when he folds his sleeves. well, i would have asked the same thing, but why the discrimination. (i cant answer my own question in case you havent realised.)
#3 Time (Oh, abundance!)Guys are given 10minutes to bathe and girls are given 30minutes (some take more than a hour just to bathe. i wonder if they have more surface area to cover). Girls are given an hour to change, do makeup, paint their nails (?), etc. Guys are given 5 minutes to wax their hair (for the considerably more metro ones), to slap on facial products (for the poor acne sufferers like me and also the more metro ones) and of course to pick a tshirt to go with that same pair of jeans.
Okay, i'm in desperate need for lunch now so, this post has serve its purpose in entertaining me (and i hope you too) for the past 20minutes. haha. Maybe i'll add on later. Most probably not. I do not want to wage a gender war here. Well, not this century anyway.
